If you are like me then you always need more space for plants. Seedlings, fresh imports, and rehabs need extra care and a high humidity environment is super-important.
A regular plant prop box isn’t adequate for me as it lacks the aesthetic element. It needs to be modular and light so I can still move them around like a prop box - this is my goal!
So I went in search of a new cabinet but couldn’t find exactly what I needed and since desperate times call for desperate measures, I decided to build one and you can too!
All of the items for this modular prop box were purchased on Amazon.com and I’ll include links to them below and don’t worry, there’s no complex construction required for this. I completed this project in ~30 minutes and you can too so let’s get started!
Construction List:
Double Sided Tape or ½ wide Velcro strips (the Barrina lights will include double-sided tape that you can use)
Pen or marker to mark drill holes on the bins
Safety glasses - safety first!
Step 1
Assemble the closet organizer bins: I found the bins to be very easy to assemble and didn’t take more than 2 minutes per bin.You start by snapping the 2 side sections into the bottom section followed by the back section and then snap on the doors and top. You’ll repeat this for each of the bins. Note that I’m linking to the 132 QT, 3-Pack but I used the 4-Pack which isn’t in stock.
Step 2
Drill holes in each bin for the grow light cable management (Put on those safety glasses):
Flip the bins upside down so you can mark a hole on the bottom of the bins (Note: you will not drill a hole on the very bottom bin)
Where you drill the hole is determined by where you need to position the cabinet relative to the wall power. For example, if the cabinet is next to a power outlet to the left of the cabinet, your holes will be drilled on the bottom left side of the bin.
Using a corded or cordless drill and 7/8” hole saw, carefully drill a hole where you’ve marked on each bin. The purpose of this hole is to route the light cables through each bin to connect lights together so there is only a single power cable to plug-in to your power outlet.
Step 3
Assemble the Grow Lights: On the underside of the top section of each bin, secure the grow light to the center of the section using either double sided tape or velcro.
Step 4
Stack the bins: This part is the easiest! Just stack the bins on top of each other and check the alignment of the holes. Connect each grow light to a power cable. Connect each light together by those cables (daisy-chaining).
Step 6
Plug the grow lights into power and turn-on!
Voila…Congratulations and you now have your very own DIY modular plant prop box that you can proudly display in your living room!
